Silicon Valley, California, Oct 2016/Meeting Recap/ A group of 100 CSPs, IoT vendors and startups spent a few hours today debating the future of the Connected Home and some interesting points were made.
1) If we consider the Smart Home to be a collection of “smart” devices, the way the market has been traveling the past few years, the current set of content and operational silos will continue to increase. We should be thinking about ways to move past the “Smart Home” and into the “Thoughtful Home.” (see Nest’s presentation for more on the Thoughtful Home.)
2) The biggest problem with Smart Home is installation – from connectivity issues and WiFi to making things communicate and updating hardware, software, or firmware – customers are return mass quantities of what they buy. (See Argus Insight’s presentation for an analysis of the love it and hate it in smart home consumer devices.)
Of course there was much more food for thought – plus a handful of startup demos and a pan-market view of how this market gets monetized with Support.com, Microsemi, and Evrything, that I can’t fully digest for you. Although you can find photos of the meeting in our library and videos of the demos on our YouTube channel. Members also have access to the presentations and the attendee list in our library.
Special Thanks to Nest Labs for hosting us today; your “Living Room” was a perfect place for a Telecom Council meeting. Watch the video here
